Tamil as a Classical Language
A classical language has an independent literary tradition and a large and ancient body of written literature. Tamil is the first language in India to be declared as a classical language. In 2004 Tamil was declared a classical language of India. It met three criteria: its origins are ancient; it has an independent tradition and possesses a considerable body of ancient literature.
Specialty of Tamil
It is an official language in three different countries: India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. There are also significant Tamil-speaking communities in several other countries worldwide. They all make up a large portion of the 75 million that speak Tamil as a first language. It is written in the Tamil script, consisting of 18 consonants, 12 vowels, and one unique character.
In Tamil, nouns are split into two groups: rational and irrational. Rational nouns are considered ‘high class’ and include nouns relating to deities and humans. Most other nouns fit into the irrational group, considered lower class. Verbs are inflected using suffixes, often multiple stacked together to form the different cases. Sentence structure is generally SOV, though OSV is possible. It is also common for the subject to be dropped when there is a contextual approach.
